Why Is This Seder Unlike All Other Seders?
  + stars: | 2024-04-24 | by ( Joseph Bernstein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Why was this Seder different from all other Seders? Start with the setup: a glittering table set for 100, running the length of a drafty warehouse in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Also unlike most seders, this one, on Thursday night (before the start of the holiday), featured a D.J. Guests at the Seder and past parties have included Brett Gelman, the actor; Samantha Ronson, the D.J. ; Richard Kind, the actor; Chi Ossé, the Brooklyn city councilman; and the actor David Schwimmer.

So, when John and I started dating two years into living together, nobody was entirely surprised. AdvertisementHaving separate bedrooms was what we were used toWe visited one one-bedroom apartment just to check it out and knew immediately it wasn't for us. The apartment is two floors, with both bedrooms, the full bath, and the kitchen and dining area on the top floor, and a half-bath and living room in the basement. So, by having the bed in my room, it made my room also his, in a sense. Besides sleeping in the same bed at night, we treat our separate bedrooms the same way we did as roommates.

The landlord, a group called Hacienda, had a unique vision: creating a community of sexually adventurous people whose house rules preached consent above all else, particularly during the orgies they threw in the basement every week. Over the years that followed, Hacienda flourished, and sex positivity, a movement to destigmatize different types of sexual expression, became more mainstream. Ms. Fisher felt a measure of pride at being part of a community that had pushed for greater acceptance of her lifestyle. Ms. Fisher was in her kitchen at Hacienda in spring 2012 when she was approached and badgered into sex by a guest of the sex party she had left downstairs, she said. She awoke feeling that she had not given her consent to what had occurred — that she had been raped.

A Brooklyn D.I.Y. Landmark Changes With the Times

Just before midnight on Saturday, hard techno began pulsating from the Market Hotel, a D.I.Y. music venue located beside the elevated tracks of a Myrtle Avenue subway station in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The party, “Market Hotel Sweet Sixteen,” was meant to commemorate the venue’s legacy as a D.I.Y. Over a decade ago, the Market Hotel nurtured a middle-class bohemia, providing a stage to punk and indie bands like Real Estate, Vivian Girls, Titus Andronicus and the So So Glos. Beyoncé approves of cowboycore

Completing her look were a pair of aviator-style shades, an embellished head scarf and a stone-colored cowboy hat. In fact, Beyoncé hasn’t been without a cowboy hat in nearly two weeks. On TikTok #cowboycore has 11.4 million views and counting, where users video themselves styling a wide-brimmed rancher cap or, as in one video, pairing vintage leather chaps with a belted trench coat. Cowboy boots, for one, were plucked from their country context and thrust onto the urban streets of metropolitan cities years ago. The embroidered leather boots have been a mainstay of the style set ever since, transcending over the years from a subversive statement piece to something more timeless.

Why Beyoncé Came to Bushwick
  + stars: | 2024-02-14 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Only two days after Taylor Swift bestowed some of her fairy dust on a niche New York Fashion Week label by wearing Area jeans to the Super Bowl, an even more unlikely moment of celebrity-show synergy occurred: Beyoncé showed up in a warehouse in deep Brooklyn for the Luar show. Yup, Beyoncé’s first public appearance after announcing Renaissance “Act II,” and her first appearance at a New York Fashion Week show in years, was in Bushwick. It’s the fashion equivalent of winning the attention lottery. The guest of honor made her entrance covered in a blinding number of rhinestones, with mirrored shades and a cowboy hat, toting a Luar bag that she carefully held front and center so it would be in every photograph. Was this a clue to her coming album couturier?

This week, Where to Eat columnist emeritus Pete Wells has an ode to the patty melt that will send you running to one of the six New York City restaurant versions he spotlights, or the nearest diner. Patty melts, after all, have long been the bread and butter (and caramelized onions) of the old-school diner, institutions that are in increasingly short supply in New York, but to quote “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” are “not dead yet.”I grew up with Waffle House as my go-to diner and, for the record, I like my double hash browns smothered. Once I moved to New York, I nursed many a hangover at Tina’s Place in Bushwick, around for more than 80 years. Later I became fascinated with diners for millennials, by millennials like Golden Diner and Baby Blues Luncheonette, but I always come home to the unfussy and affordable comfort of the old school.

‘Zoomers’ Review: Just Don’t Kill the Vibes

It’s immediately clear that the 30-something Gasda, whose 2022 play “Dimes Square” captured the crowd of artists, writers and scenesters in New York City’s downtown, has spent significant time observing his younger subjects. With the exception of a few awkward phrases, his naturalistic play captures the way Gen Z talks. “Zoomers” opens with three roommates ambling around their Brooklyn apartment in Bushwick, a land where shaggy hair is a personality trait and hard kombucha might as well be on tap. Michael (Jonah O’Hara-David), Jacob (Henry Lynch), and Jada (Reneé-Nicole Powell) are recovering from a night of respective drinking, smoking weed and existential dread. For the emotionally stunted Jacob in particular, it’s a pleasurable escape whenever conversations get too heated.

Perhaps Ms. Neilsa, a model in Bushwick, captured the vibe perfectly: “I’m not going to lie, this sucks,” she said. A weekend in August lost to an annoying drizzle, but no problem. Hispanic unemployment rate declines in September
  + stars: | 2023-10-06 | by ( Samantha Subin | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Andrew Lichtenstein | Corbis News | Getty ImagesThe U.S. unemployment rate held steady in September, but ticked down among Hispanic workers, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, and came in slightly ahead of a 3.7% forecast. Broken down, it dipped to 4.3% from 4.4% among Hispanic women and held steady at 4.3% for Hispanic men. However, it does mark a stark from the depths of the pandemic when the group experienced the highest unemployment rate, according to Gould. Among Black men, the unemployment rate increased to 5.6% from 5%, and fell to 4.5% from 4.7% among Black women.

New Yorkers fed up with a tough housing market are making the pilgrimage to Jersey City. New York City housing is becoming more elusive and expensive, and Jersey City is an attractive option. That's not to say that Jersey City is much cheaper, but there are more options: Along the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, dozens of luxury high-rises have sprouted up within the last 10 years, some filled with their own coffee shops, heated pools, and rooftop dog runs. Now, he knows at least eight to 10 acquaintances who have taken the Jersey City plunge since he moved. Huy Fong Foods, the creator of Sriracha chili sauce, announced a shortage in 2022. In 2022, the Irwindale, California, company that created the sauce, Huy Fong Foods, notified customers that a "severe" chili pepper shortage was disrupting its production line. Since then, grocery stores and restaurants have been having difficulty keeping a reserve of the beloved hot chili sauce, causing third-party sellers to mark up prices. Underwood Ranches owner Craig Underwood filed a cross-complaint shortly after in 2018, claiming that Huy Fong breached its contract and committed fraud. Private equity firms have bought up hundreds of smaller apartment buildings in trendy New York neighborhoods. Private equity firms own a very small, but growing, fraction of American real estate. Some argue that private equity, hedge funds, and other institutional investors are a convenient target and are being unfairly blamed for the nation's worsening housing affordability crisis. The recent increase in private equity purchases, particularly of single-family homes, has drawn scrutiny, including from Congress, over the last few years. Democrats also couldn't reach agreement on measures that would have boosted tenant protections, including rent stabilization and eviction protections.

In New York City, debates over affordability often center on the proliferation of opulent high-rise developments. But in the boroughs, deep-pocketed investors are buying up hundreds of smaller buildings, prompting a new set of concerns in the city’s deepening housing crisis. Over the past few years, private equity firms have quietly spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying apartments in neighborhoods like Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg in Brooklyn and Ridgewood in Queens, property records show. Private equity firms — which typically invest money on behalf of pension funds, endowments or other large sources of wealth — focus on assets, like businesses or housing, that they can buy relatively cheaply but that have big profit potential. Their expansion into the housing market across the nation has prompted scrutiny in Congress about whether the trend is amplifying America’s affordability problems.

I’ve Listened to This Breakup Song a Million Times

Eventually I ended up in the back of a cab in Bushwick, listening to the song on repeat. The perfect breakup song must also be a sort of theater, where the singer becomes the character fully. The very cadence of the song, her voice, sonically pristine, still spells out a certain longing and despair. It feels as if the song were creating its own black hole when it was made. Who can escape the condensed emotional singularity of a breakup song?

Where Do New Yorkers Want to Rent?

If you’re moving to New York City and want to find the most popular rental neighborhoods, it makes sense to follow locals in the know. Recently, RentHop did just that by studying web traffic to New York City listings that originated from within the city. Two Queens neighborhoods and four Brooklyn neighborhoods showed increased popularity. Astoria, Queens, rose to the top from ninth place a year ago. Other drops in Manhattan included Greenwich Village and the West Village, ranked 10th and 11th, each dropping six spots from last year; and the Bowery area ranked 13th, falling seven spots.

In July 1973, the Haitian activist Viter Juste moved his family and his belongings in a U-Haul truck from Bushwick, Brooklyn, to a neighborhood in Miami-Dade County known as one of the earliest settlements in the area. Mr. Juste’s move — about a decade after he relocated to the United States — was the catalyst for a change in the neighborhood then known as Buena Vista. Thousands of others later migrated from Haiti and created a new community that Mr. Juste is credited for naming Little Haiti. Little Haiti’s proximity to the hippest restaurants, bars, shops and clubs in Miami is enticing for developers. And as much of Miami-Dade County endures torrents brought on by climate change, the neighborhood’s elevation — about 10 feet above sea level and in an area of minimal flood hazards — is particularly attractive.

There are colonies in virtually every neighborhood with suitable nooks and crannies — in Bushwick, in Washington Heights, in Ozone Park. There may be as many as half a million feral cats padding around New York City, but no one knows for sure. “No one knows, and the city doesn’t care to know,” said Will Zweigart, the founder of Flatbush Cats, the nonprofit group that Ms. Gabriel and scores of others volunteer with. “Because if they knew, they would be accountable to do something about it.”There are a number of reasons for the explosion in feral cat colonies. Some people, fearing that their unwanted cats would be euthanized if they were taken to a shelter, simply let them out on the streets and hoped for the best.
